Floors to compare at the Richmond showroom

The catalog on this site covers four families. Call ahead with the product name if you want to see a specific color on the Richmond display.

  • Engineered hardwood: mostly European and French oak, plus hickory and maple in some collections, from Denali Hardwood Floors, Chesapeake, Hallmark Floors, Veranda, Aged Wide Floors, Sienna, Symphony and PermWood. Browse the engineered wood collections.
  • Luxury vinyl plank: rigid-core SPC from PermShield (Lite and One Plus) and Belocore, with the pad attached. See the vinyl plank lines.
  • Laminate: Chesapeake All American Premium and Fusion Design XL, both rated AC4. Compare them on the laminate collection page.
  • Water-resistant choices for kitchens, baths and laundry rooms, grouped on our waterproof flooring page. On these products, "waterproof" refers to water on top of the floor; the warranties exclude floods and water under the planks.

Older Richmond houses: what changes before the new floor goes in

Richmond's housing is old. Census figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median year a home in the city was built at 1959, with 28% of units built in 1939 or earlier. The city counts about 68,000 buildings, nearly 23% of them more than 100 years old.

That age shows up in three places on a flooring job:

  • Paint on the trim. In homes built before 1978, EPA's RRP rule requires anyone paid to do work that disturbs painted surfaces to be lead-safe certified; on a flooring job, that can be the painted baseboard and trim. The rule also covers landlords and house flippers doing their own work.
  • Old tile underneath. EPA advises not to sand or level flooring that may contain asbestos, and to install the new floor over it when possible. Chesapeake's installation guide also warns against sanding vinyl or synthetic tiles that may contain asbestos.
  • Wood subfloors over a crawl space. Chesapeake asks for at least 18 inches of ventilated space below and 6-mil poly over the soil; Denali asks for black 6-mil poly with taped seams and 18 to 24 inches of clearance.

PermShield can go over most existing hard floors if they are clean, dry, flat and sound, which helps when the old layer should stay put. Our guide on how to acclimate engineered hardwood covers the step before installing wood in an old house.

Richmond humidity and wood floors

At Richmond International Airport, NOAA records average relative humidity of 81% in the morning and 53% in the afternoon over the year; in August the averages are 87% and 57%. The airport averages 44 days a year at 90°F or hotter.

Indoors, the engineered wood makers we carry want something different.

Chesapeake asks for the HVAC to run at least 14 days before installation, at 60°F to 80°F and 35% to 55% relative humidity, and for that humidity to be kept at all times. Denali asks for the same ranges. In a Richmond summer, the air conditioning runs before the floor goes in, not after.

If a room cannot hold that range, such as an enclosed sunroom without year-round climate control, look at rigid-core vinyl: PermShield allows enclosed three-season rooms within its stated temperature limits. A basement with a moisture problem needs it fixed first, since PermShield rules out areas with frequent standing water or high moisture.

Contractors, designers and landlords in Richmond

Contractors can load early: the doors open at 6 a.m. on weekdays. Designers can take samples to a client meeting.

Landlords should read the warranty before the color. Census data show about 57% of Richmond's occupied homes are rented. PermShield's residential warranty covers only owner-occupied homes, while its light-commercial terms include condos and apartment buildings. Our guide to the best flooring for rental property walks through the differences.

Finding us in Scott's Addition

The building at 3106 W Moore St is listed as a contributing one-story warehouse from about 1948 in the Scott's Addition Historic District, on the National Register since August 2005.

The district sits just west of Arthur Ashe Boulevard (called the Boulevard in the 2005 nomination), roughly bounded by Cutshaw Avenue and the old Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac rail line.

We are about half a mile in a straight line from the Science Museum of Virginia on W Broad St. Google reviewers rate the museum 4.7 from 5,770 reviews (October 9, 2026) and mention its interactive exhibits and the dome theater most often.

Our Google profile lists a free parking lot on site and wheelchair-accessible parking.

What sets the price of a flooring order in Richmond

Prices change with each order, so we quote rather than post numbers. These are the factors:

  • Collection and species, total thickness and wear layer.
  • Plank width and length, and the finish.
  • Square footage, with extra for cuts.
  • Prep an older house may need: vapor barrier, underlayment, moldings and stair parts.
  • In-stock color or special order, and delivery.

Questions Richmond customers ask

Do I need a permit to replace flooring in Richmond?

Usually not for the floor itself. The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code exempts "installation or replacement of floor finishes in all occupancies" from a permit (13VAC5-63-80, section 108.2). Exempt work still has to meet the code.

Does a historic district review my floors?

The Commission of Architectural Review reviews exterior changes in Richmond's City Old and Historic Districts. The city notes that properties in National Register districts are not subject to historic review requirements.

How do I compare flooring stores in Richmond?

Ask each store for the manufacturer's spec sheet, warranty and installation guide for the floor you like, then compare those documents side by side. Reviews help too: ours are on our Google Business Profile.

How can I keep the cost down?

Choose from colors on hand, plan the cuts to limit waste, and keep the old floor in place when the new one's instructions allow it. PermShield, for example, installs over most sound existing hard floors.
