Yes, laminate flooring in a kitchen can work, and the two Chesapeake lines we carry are sold as waterproof laminate. It works when the floor floats freely around fixed cabinets, spills are wiped up within a day, and nobody mistakes “waterproof” for leak protection.
The mistake the paperwork warns about first isn’t a spilled glass of water; it’s the cabinet or island set on top of the floor. Chesapeake says it plainly: do not install cabinets on top of the flooring.
Below are the seven mistakes that undo a laminate kitchen, each with the rule it breaks, taken from the installation guide, warranty and care guide for these floors (linked at the end). They are the same rules that ship in each carton of the two lines we stock at our North Charleston and Richmond showrooms.
Can laminate go in a kitchen?
Yes, if it is a water-resistant product rated for the traffic and installed to the maker’s rules. Both lines we stock carry an AC4 rating, which Chesapeake describes as tested durability for heavy-traffic residential areas and commercial buildings.
Their warranty protects against topical moisture from normal use, meaning cleaning water, spills and pet accidents, when the spill is cleaned up within 24 hours.
What they are not is a moisture barrier. Chesapeake’s guidelines say so directly, and add that prolonged moisture in the subfloor or the room can lead to mold and moisture damage. Our laminate flooring in North Charleston page shows every color in both lines.
Weighing laminate against SPC vinyl for the same kitchen? On paper, the difference is the water promise. Chesapeake’s laminate warranty covers topical spills cleaned up within 24 hours; PermShield warrants its SPC vinyl plank as waterproof from topical moisture, with no 24-hour clock. Both exclude leaks and standing water, and neither is a moisture barrier.
Mistake 1: setting cabinets or the island on top of the floor
Laminate is a floating floor: it expands and contracts as a single sheet. Anything fastened through it or sitting heavily on it pins that sheet in place. Chesapeake’s instructions say not to install cabinets on top of the flooring, and its care section repeats that cabinets or heavy equipment should never be installed or placed on it.
The fix is sequence. Cabinets and islands go in first, and the laminate is cut around them with an expansion gap. A side benefit: if the floor ever has to come out, the kitchen stays put.
Mistake 2: reading “waterproof” on the box as leak protection
The sell sheets for Fusion Design XL and All American Premium say “Waterproof Laminate.” The same sheets list the water warranty as a 10-year limited water-resistant warranty. Read together with the warranty document, “waterproof” here means spills on top, cleaned within 24 hours.
The warranty excludes damage from floods, plumbing or appliance leaks and standing water. A dishwasher that weeps under the toe-kick for a week is exactly the case it doesn’t cover. Check supply lines and drain connections before the floor goes down, and keep an eye on them after.
Mistake 3: skipping the expansion gap at cabinets and doorways
Chesapeake requires 3/8 inch of expansion space at every wall and vertical obstruction, and names cabinets in the list. That gap is hidden by baseboard or quarter-round fastened to the wall, never to the floor.
- Open plans: once the floor runs past 40 feet in any direction, Chesapeake calls for additional expansion space, and a T-molding is required.
- Doorways narrower than 32 inches, and places where the installation changes direction, also get a T-molding.
- Door jambs and casings are undercut so the floor slides under them with a little clearance.
In bathrooms, Chesapeake has the perimeter gap filled with 100% silicone caulk (never acrylic) before the molding goes on. It does not spell that out for kitchens; if you want the same detail along a sink wall, ask us first, so the floor keeps its room to move.
Mistake 4: steam mops and rubber-backed sink mats
Two kitchen habits the care guide rules out: steam mops, which “may cause damage to your floor,” and rubber-backed, latex or coco-fiber mats, which discolor laminate. That second one matters at the sink, where a mat usually ends up: check the backing before you put one down.
- Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner made for laminate, then wipe away excess water.
- Skip wax, solvent-based cleaners, soap-based detergents and anything caustic or abrasive.
- Wipe spills right away. Some spices are on Chesapeake’s list of things that can stain.
Mistake 5: rolling the fridge across bare planks
Chesapeake’s guidelines limit furniture to an evenly distributed 400 pounds, with no single point load over 100 pounds.
They also ask for a protective mat or plywood whenever appliances or heavy objects are moved across the floor. Before planks go under a refrigerator or range, check the appliance’s weight in its manual and ask us how the flooring maker treats it.
For everyday pieces: felt or hard plastic pads under table and chair legs, and wide casters of at least 2 inches under anything that rolls.
Mistake 6: ignoring the slab and the room’s temperature
If your kitchen sits on concrete, Chesapeake wants the slab at least 90 days old, flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and dry: no more than 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft (ASTM F1869) or 75% relative humidity (ASTM F2170). Add a 6-mil polyethylene sheet when a concrete meter reads above 4.0.
The room matters too. The installation guide asks for 65 to 85 °F and 30% to 50% relative humidity before, during and after installation, and the care guide asks for working heat and air conditioning for at least a week beforehand and for the life of the floor.
Pair those conditions with the right wear rating; our guide to the laminate AC rating explains what AC4 means.
Mistake 7: adding a second pad under padded planks
Both lines we carry are 10 mm planks with a 2 mm pad already attached. Chesapeake says no additional underlayment pad should be used when the pad is attached.
Laminate without a pad gets a single layer of laminate underlayment no thicker than 1.5 mm. Vinyl plays by different rules, which we cover in our guide to underlayment for vinyl plank flooring.
The two laminates we carry, worked through a real kitchen
| Fusion Design XL | All American Premium | |

| Thickness | 12 mm (10 mm + 2 mm attached pad) | 12 mm (10 mm + 2 mm attached foam pad) |
| Wear rating | AC4 | AC4 |
| Radiant heat approved | No | Yes |
| Locking system (product page) | Unilin angle click | Uniclic |
| Coverage per carton | 23.3 sq ft | 22.09 sq ft |
| Warranty (sell sheet) | Lifetime wear (residential) · 5 years light commercial · 10-year limited water-resistant | |
Now the numbers on an example kitchen and breakfast area of 250 sq ft. Chesapeake says to add 10% for cutting waste, so you order for 275 sq ft:
- Fusion Design XL: 275 ÷ 23.3 = 11.8, so 12 cartons. Our product page lists 23.3 sq ft per carton; the sell sheet says 23.5, and we used the smaller figure.
- All American Premium: 275 ÷ 22.09 = 12.4, so 13 cartons.
If that same floor continues into a family room and the run passes 40 feet, plan a T-molding and extra expansion space where the rooms meet. And if the kitchen has radiant floor heat, the choice is made for you: only All American Premium is approved for it.
What decides the price of a laminate kitchen floor
A kitchen quote is built from more than the cartons:
- The line and the square footage, plus 10% waste.
- Moldings: quarter-round, T-moldings and stair noses where the floor meets steps or other rooms.
- Removing the old floor and leveling the subfloor to 3/16 inch over 10 feet; 6-mil poly on a slab when readings call for it.
- Moving appliances out and back on protection, and whether the cabinets are already in place.
Bring your kitchen measurements to our North Charleston or Richmond showroom and see both lines side by side, or start by comparing our laminate flooring colors online.
