Best Flooring for a Kitchen: Six Tests Every Floor Has to Pass

Among vinyl, laminate and wood, the best flooring for most kitchens is a rigid-core SPC vinyl plank. Its warranty calls it waterproof against water on top, with no hour count stated; it accepts damper concrete than laminate does; and you can damp-mop it.

Laminate is a fair choice if spills reliably get wiped up within 24 hours. Engineered wood suits a dry, careful kitchen where nobody wet-mops.

Whichever you choose, put the cabinets and the island in first, and keep the floor from running under them. PermShield and Chesapeake say not to install cabinets on top of their floating floors; Denali calls cabinets on any of its wood floors not recommended, and never acceptable on a floating one; Hallmark asks for built-in cabinets before the floor.

What a kitchen floor actually has to survive

Most kitchen-floor lists rank materials by looks and price. The manufacturers’ documents rank them by what goes wrong. Reading the installation guides and warranties for the floors we stock, six tests keep coming up:

  • Water on top: spills, a dripping dish rack, a pet bowl.
  • Water from below or behind: a dishwasher or ice-maker line that leaks.
  • The slab under the kitchen, if the house sits on concrete.
  • Heat in the floor, if there is radiant heating.
  • Weight that moves: the refrigerator and range when they are pulled out.
  • The cleaning routine you will actually keep.

Porcelain and ceramic tile top many kitchen lists for water, and they belong in the comparison if you are open to tile. We don’t sell tile, so we can’t hand you its manual the way we can for the floors below; a tile setter working to the Tile Council of North America’s handbook is the right person to ask. This guide sticks to the three floor types on our shelves.

Three floor types, six kitchen tests

SPC vinyl plank: the forgiving choice

If your kitchen sees kids, pets or a sink that splashes, SPC vinyl plank answers the most tests. PermShield’s installation instructions (September 2023) ask you to install cabinets and permanent islands before the floor and never set them on top of it. On a slab, the line accepts readings that would rule out laminate.

Two limits are worth knowing. The warranty excludes standing water from leaking plumbing or appliances, so a slow dishwasher drip is still your problem. And PermShield’s care guide (May 2026) warns that quaternary ammonium disinfectants can harm the surface over time, so check the label of any kitchen spray you use on the floor.

Our waterproof flooring for kitchens page shows the SPC colors we stock. If you are torn between this and laminate, LVP vs laminate walks through five deciding questions.

Laminate: fine, if spills don’t sit

Both Chesapeake lines we carry are sold as waterproof laminate, but Chesapeake’s warranty (June 2025) is the useful part: topical spills are covered when they are cleaned up within 24 hours. That fits a kitchen where someone is home and wipes as they go. It doesn’t fit one where a leaky dog bowl can sit all weekend.

Laminate also wants steady conditions: 65 to 85 °F and 30% to 50% relative humidity, before, during and after installation. The seven mistakes that undo a laminate kitchen, including the rubber-backed sink mat, are in our guide to laminate flooring in kitchen.

Engineered wood: beautiful, with house rules

Real wood in a kitchen is a choice about habits more than materials. Chesapeake’s hardwood care guidelines (June 2025) say never to clean or wet-mop with water and recommend area rugs at sinks. Denali’s warranty asks owners to watch for spills in the kitchen in particular, and notes that hard water can leave surface stains if not removed promptly.

The appliance rules come from Hallmark’s engineered hardwood installation instructions: move the refrigerator on a soft-wheel dolly or glides, and run a flexible braided line to the ice maker. If you’re weighing wood against vinyl for the whole open plan, engineered hardwood vs luxury vinyl plank compares them room by room.

Standing, sound and slips

None of the documents rate comfort for a cook who stands for an hour, but they do describe what’s underfoot. One Plus has a 1.5 mm IXPE pad attached; the laminate has a 2 mm attached pad. Under engineered wood, it depends on whether the boards are glued, nailed or floated.

For the spot in front of the sink, Chesapeake recommends an area rug whose backing won’t discolor the floor. Wet floors are a slip risk: Chesapeake’s laminate guide warns that damp floors are slippery, asks owners to post a warning while one dries, and to keep silicone-based sprays off the surface.

For lifespan, the warranties give the only figures: lifetime residential wear on both laminates, limited lifetime residential on One Plus, 30 years limited residential on Denali’s engineered lines.

One kitchen, three floors: the numbers

Take a 12 × 14 ft kitchen with a 3 × 6 ft island that is installed first, as the manuals for all three floor types ask. The floor goes around it.

  • Area to cover: 168 sq ft minus the 18 sq ft island = 150 sq ft. Each count below uses its own maker’s waste rule, which is why the extra differs.
  • SPC (PermShield One Plus): PermShield suggests 5% extra and 10% to 15% where obstacles are many. At 10%, that’s 165 sq ft; at 23.64 sq ft per box, 7 boxes. Expansion gap: 1/4 inch around the walls and the island.
  • Laminate (All American Premium): Chesapeake adds 10%, so 165 sq ft; at 22.09 sq ft per carton, 8 cartons. Expansion gap: 3/8 inch around the walls and the island.
  • Engineered (Denali Eterna): Denali adds 5%, so 158 sq ft; at 34.1 sq ft per carton, 5 cartons. Gap and fastening follow Denali’s method for a 5/8 inch board with a 4 mm top layer: cleat or glue.

The island’s edge gets the same expansion gap as the walls, covered by trim fastened to the island, never to the floor. On the laminate, a kitchen that opens into a family room and runs past 40 feet also needs a T-molding.

Carton counts are only the start of a quote. Taking up the old floor, pulling appliances out and back on protection, slab testing and leveling, adhesive where it is required, and the trim into the next room usually differ more from kitchen to kitchen than the floor itself does.

The short version, kitchen by kitchen

  • Busy family kitchen, pets, a slab: SPC vinyl plank.
  • Kitchen that opens into living areas, people home most days, spills wiped right away: laminate or SPC; laminate only with steady air conditioning.
  • Kitchen where real wood matters and nobody wet-mops: engineered wood, with rugs at the sink and a braided ice-maker line.
  • Radiant heat under the kitchen: check the exact product; only one of our two laminates is approved, and wood depends on species and top layer.
