In the LVP vs laminate choice, pick LVP (rigid-core SPC vinyl plank) where water can sit, slabs run damp, the air conditioning gets switched off, or chairs roll. Pick laminate for dry, climate-controlled rooms where a thicker plank suits you and spills get wiped within a day.
The surprise is where the two part ways. Both are sold as waterproof, and the boxes look alike; the installation manuals disagree about the concrete underneath. Chesapeake caps its laminate at 3 pounds of moisture vapor per 1,000 square feet in 24 hours, while PermShield lets its SPC vinyl plank go up to 8.
The five questions below come straight from the documents that ship with the floors we stock in North Charleston and Richmond.
Wood fiber or stone-plastic: what sits under the picture
Both floors are a printed image under a clear protective layer. The difference is the core. The North American Laminate Flooring Association describes laminate as a wood-based rigid floor covering with a fiberboard core, such as HDF or MDF.
“LVP” covers more than one build: flexible glue-down vinyl, and rigid-core planks with a WPC or SPC core. Rigid-core planks fall under ASTM F3261, the specification for resilient flooring with a rigid polymeric core, whose abstract requires vinyl chloride polymers to make up at least 60% of the binder by weight. All the vinyl planks we stock are rigid SPC.
Wood fiber reacts to water, which is why laminate standards include a soak test for swelling; PermShield, by contrast, warrants its vinyl plank’s integrity against topical water. Every other rule in this article follows from that difference. If you are comparing vinyl cores among themselves, our SPC vs WPC flooring guide covers that split.
The two laminates and two SPC lines we stock, rule by rule
| Rule | Chesapeake laminate (Fusion Design XL, All American Premium) | PermShield SPC vinyl plank (Lite, One Plus) |
|---|---|---|
| Core and total thickness | Wood-fiber core; 12 mm, of which 2 mm is the attached pad | SPC core; One Plus is 6.5 mm in all (5.0 mm core plus a 1.5 mm IXPE pad); Lite has a 1 mm pad |
| Surface rating | AC4 abrasion class | Clear wear layer of 20 mil (Lite) or 22 mil (One Plus) |
| Water on top | Covered when spills are cleaned up within 24 hours | Warranted waterproof from topical moisture, no hour count stated |
| Floods, leaks, standing water | Excluded | Excluded |
| Concrete slab limit | 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft (ASTM F1869) or 75% RH (ASTM F2170) | 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 90% RH |
| Room conditions | 65 to 85 °F and 30% to 50% RH before, during and after installation; never outdoors or without year-round climate control | Approved for enclosed three-season rooms; 55 to 100 °F while occupied, -20 to 176 °F when empty |
| Expansion gap | 3/8 inch; T-molding past 40 feet | 1/4 inch up to 2,500 sq ft, 1/2 inch above that |
| Radiant heat | All American Premium yes, Fusion Design XL no | Allowed if the floor never exceeds 82 °F |
| Rolling chairs and heavy loads | Protective mat under casters; furniture up to 400 lb spread evenly, no point load over 100 lb | Must be glued down under casters, wheelchairs or safes |
Read from: Chesapeake laminate installation guidelines, limited warranty and Fusion Design XL and All American Premium sell sheets (all revised June 1, 2025); PermShield floating installation instructions and warranty (revised September 1, 2023); PermShield One Plus technical data sheet; TRD Floor Supplies product pages.
Our third vinyl line, Belocore SPC, lists a 4.4 mm plank, a 12 mil wear layer and a 1 mm IXPE pad on its product pages. Its installation rules aren’t published there, so the table sticks to the two brands whose manuals we could read in full.
Five questions, in order
Go down the list. The first “yes” usually decides it.
1. Could water sit on this floor longer than a day?
A dripping dog bowl found after a weekend away, a kids’ bath, a laundry room. Chesapeake’s guidelines say topical water for 24 hours does not affect the integrity of its laminate, and the warranty covers spills cleaned up within that window. PermShield attaches no clock to topical water. If the honest answer is “yes, sometimes,” go with SPC.
Neither floor seals a room. Both manuals ask for silicone caulk around the perimeter in bathrooms, and both warranties exclude leaks and standing water.
2. Is it a slab, and do you know its moisture numbers?
Reading above 3 pounds or 75% relative humidity rules out the laminate; the SPC line accepts up to 8 pounds or 90%. No numbers yet? Get them before you choose. Our guide to subfloor moisture testing explains which test each brand accepts.
3. Will the heat and air ever be off?
Chesapeake says laminate should never go where temperature and humidity aren’t controlled year-round. PermShield names solariums, sunrooms, three-season rooms and seasonal cottages as approved for its SPC, as long as installation happens with the HVAC running between 65 and 85 °F. A beach cottage closed up from October to April is an SPC job.

4. Will chairs roll or something heavy sit on it?
Here the two floors trade places. PermShield requires gluing its SPC wherever rolling casters, wheelchairs or a safe will sit, because heavy loads pin a floating floor and cause gaps or peaking.
Chesapeake’s laminate keeps floating but asks for protective mats under casters and limits furniture to 400 pounds, evenly spread. A home office with a desk chair works with either, as long as you plan the mat or the glue; see floating floor vs glue down.
5. Is there radiant heat in the floor?
Only one of our two laminates is approved: All American Premium. Fusion Design XL is not. PermShield allows its SPC over embedded radiant heat as long as the floor surface never passes 82 °F, and recommends an in-floor sensor.
When laminate is the better buy
If you answered “no” five times, laminate is fully in play. Its plank is thicker, 12 mm against 6.5 mm for One Plus, which matters at doorways where the new floor meets an existing one; we cover height changes in flooring transitions between rooms.
The boards also run bigger: Fusion Design XL comes in 9.3 × 72 inch planks, against 7.09 × 48.03 inches for One Plus. And price can favor either side; it depends on the line, the pad and the plank size more than on the category, so compare quotes for the same room. You can see the two AC4 laminate lines we stock side by side online.
Feel, sound, scratches, indoor air and lifespan
- Underfoot: the laminate pairs a 10 mm board with a 2 mm attached pad; One Plus pairs a 5 mm SPC core with a 1.5 mm IXPE pad.
- Sound: PermShield’s One Plus data sheet prints IIC 72 and STC 72, figures that come from a tested floor-ceiling assembly rather than the plank alone, while Chesapeake’s sell sheets print none. On paper neither one wins; walking on both is the only fair test.
- Indoor air: both laminate lines list FloorScore certification and CARB compliance (CARB II on Fusion Design XL), per Chesapeake’s sell sheets and our product pages. PermShield’s website shows FloorScore and GREENGUARD Gold logos and links a product-certification file; ask for the certificate that covers the line you choose.
- Look and texture: both laminates are embossed in register, meaning the surface texture follows the printed grain, per Chesapeake’s sell sheets. The PermShield lines list a UV acrylic finish and a micro-beveled edge.
- Scratches and wear: AC4 is an abrasion class and 22 mil is a thickness, two different scales; neither number converts into the other. Our laminate AC rating guide explains the first.
- Lifespan, as far as warranties show: both laminate lines carry a lifetime residential wear warranty; One Plus carries a limited lifetime residential warranty.
- Installing it yourself: both float on a click joint, Uniclic or Unilin angle click on the laminate and Välinge 2G angle on One Plus.
Cleaning differs a little. Chesapeake asks for a pH-neutral cleaner made for laminate, excess moisture wiped up, and never a steam mop. PermShield’s care guide (May 2026) allows routine damp mopping with a pH-neutral resilient cleaner but rules out steam mops, bleach and mop-and-shine products.
Rentals, condos and small businesses: whose warranty still applies
PermShield’s residential warranty ends if the home becomes a rental, but its light commercial warranty covers multi-family buildings for 10 years (Lite) or 15 years (One Plus). Chesapeake puts laminate in multi-family units and common areas under its 5-year light commercial terms, which exclude rolling traffic.
For a landlord, that comparison matters more than the look; we walk through it in best flooring for rental property. Offices and shops have their own page: commercial flooring options for North Charleston businesses.
What moves the cost of either floor
We quote by the job, not from a printed list. These are the pieces that make one quote larger than another:
- The line: thickness, attached pad and plank size.
- Square footage plus waste. Chesapeake adds 10% for laminate; PermShield suggests 5%, and 10% to 15% in rooms with many angles.
- Slab work: testing, leveling to 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and 6-mil poly where the readings call for it.
- Glue and labor where SPC must be adhered for rolling loads.
- Moldings, stair nosings and T-moldings, including the laminate’s break past 40 feet.
Still torn? One question usually ends it
Picture the worst day this floor will have. Is it a glass knocked off the counter and wiped up in a minute, or a pet bowl leaking all weekend while the house sits closed? The first describes a laminate room. The second describes a room for the SPC vinyl plank lines we stock.
So, which one is yours? If it is the first, either floor passes and the look can decide. If it is the second, the rules above have already chosen for you.
Either way, the next step is the same: take a sample of each home and leave them in the room for a few days, or book a showroom visit to walk on both side by side.
