LVP Wear Layer: What the Mil Number Buys and What It Doesn’t

The thickest wear layer on any vinyl plank we sell is 22 mil, about 0.56 mm. That is roughly one-seventh of the real-wood layer on our thickest engineered hardwood boards, and it still carries a lifetime residential wear warranty.

An LVP wear layer is the clear film bonded over the printed wood or stone image, measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). A thicker layer gives the print more protection before traffic wears through it, which is the kind of wear the warranty counts. It does not make the plank scratch-proof, and the warranty says so.

What the number measures

One mil is one-thousandth of an inch, or 0.0254 mm. So 12 mil is about 0.30 mm, 20 mil about 0.51 mm and 22 mil about 0.56 mm. The figure covers only the clear layer, never the whole plank.

Manufacturers measure it with a standard test. COREtec’s specification sheets, for example, list “Wear Layer Thickness (ASTM F410): 20 mil” next to overall thickness measured under a different method. When two spec sheets cite the same test, their mil numbers compare directly.

Every plank on our luxury vinyl flooring page in North Charleston lists its wear layer in mil, so you can compare lines before you see the samples.

The wear layers on our vinyl planks, counted

We went through all 21 vinyl plank products on our site. They fall into three wear layers, one per collection:

CollectionColorsWear layerAttached padLight commercial wear warranty
PermShield One Plus1322 mil (0.56 mm)1.5 mm IXPE15 years
PermShield Lite520 mil (0.51 mm)1 mm IXPE10 years
Belocore SPC312 mil (0.30 mm)1 mm IXPEAsk us for the warranty document

Both PermShield collections carry a limited lifetime residential warranty against wear-through and staining in owner-occupied homes. The difference shows up in light commercial use: 2 more mil on One Plus come with 5 more years of coverage than Lite, according to PermShield’s warranty (revised September 1, 2023).

The Belocore plank also shows how small the layer is in proportion: 12 mil is about 7% of its listed 4.4 mm thickness. The rest is the printed layer, the SPC core and the pad.

What the warranty counts as wear, and what it leaves out

Under PermShield’s warranty, wear means wearing through the wear layer far enough to change the printed pattern. Surface scratches and loss of gloss are defined as normal wear, not defects. Normal wear in high-traffic areas, seating areas and pivot points is excluded too.

The same document lists damage the wear layer is not expected to stop:

  • Scratches, cuts, gouges and impact damage.
  • Rolling traffic and other non-foot traffic.
  • Vacuum beater bars, robotic vacuums and steam mops.
  • Pet clawing, chewing, digging and scratching.
  • Indentations from spiked heels or furniture without proper protectors or chair pads.

So the mil number buys time before the print wears through, not immunity from a dragged chair. Floor protectors, chair pads and mats do the rest; for rooms with office chairs, PermShield’s installation instructions also require the floor to be glued down.

Thicker layer, same core rules

The wear layer and the core are separate decisions. A 20 mil SPC plank and a 20 mil WPC plank carry the same clear layer; what differs is the core underneath, its thickness and the installation rules that come with it. We compared those in SPC vs WPC flooring.

That’s also why a heavier wear layer doesn’t change the subfloor prep. Flatness, moisture limits on concrete and expansion gaps come from the installation manual, whatever the mil count.

Comparing mil numbers across brands and floor types

Three habits keep comparisons honest:

  • Convert before you compare. A sheet that lists 0.3 mm is describing a 12 mil layer; 0.5 mm is about 20 mil.
  • Read the warranty wording, not just the years. PermShield’s commercial terms say “light commercial” (offices, salons, multi-family buildings); COREtec’s WPC sheets say “medium commercial.” Those are different promises.
  • Don’t compare across floor types by thickness. Laminate is rated by an abrasion class, explained in our article on laminate AC rating. Engineered hardwood’s wear layer is solid wood measured in millimeters, covered in our guide to the engineered hardwood wear layer.

Choosing a wear layer by how the room is used

Start from who lives on the floor and how the warranty treats that use:

  • Owner-occupied home, normal family traffic: both PermShield layers carry a lifetime residential wear warranty (ask us for the Belocore document); the thicker layers add margin in kitchens, halls and entries.
  • Home office, salon or light retail: look at the light commercial years. Among our lines, One Plus carries 15 and Lite 10.
  • Rental units: PermShield’s residential warranty ends once a home becomes a rental; its light commercial terms name multi-family buildings such as condos and apartments. We walk through those rules in best flooring for rental property.

Shoppers also ask whether 30 mil vinyl is worth it. We don’t carry a 30 mil plank, so we can only tell you what to check: whether the extra mil comes with longer or broader commercial coverage in writing. If the warranty doesn’t change, neither does the promise.

What moves the price

The wear layer is only one of five things that set a vinyl plank quote, and we leave the dollar figures to the quote itself:

  • The collection: wear layer, attached pad and plank size.
  • Square footage plus cutting waste.
  • Installation method: floating, or glued where chairs roll or heavy furniture sits.
  • Subfloor prep: leveling, moisture testing and 6-mil poly over concrete.
  • Moldings and stair pieces.
